John Horvatich is a senior accountant with the New Brighton
office of Cottrill Arbutina Professional Services. His practice
covers the gamut of audit and tax services for non-profit
agencies, governmental bodies, credit unions and for-profit
enterprises. As a generalist, he has a broad-ranging knowledge
of how to resolve a wide variety of issues and utilize technology
in creative ways.
Mr. Horvatich’s non-profits practice
focuses on helping organizations keep accurate, well-ordered
financial records
and educating individual clients who do not have accounting
backgrounds. Among the technical details he regularly handles
are IRS regulations on donations and issues over restricted
and unrestricted funds. He often helps clients upgrade their
accounting systems in computer environments.
For one non-profit client, he reviewed a large balance of
what was thought to be permanently restricted net assets.
After discovering that the restrictions actually were only
temporary, the client was able to free up substantial funds
for the board of directors to apply to general business operations.
Mr. Horvatich has served a number of
school districts and local municipalities. He is very familiar
with the sweeping
changes mandated by the federal government’s new accounting
standards (GASB 34). These regulations impact the recordkeeping
policies and procedures of local government bodies. He also
understands the SAS 99 regulations regarding fraud, requiring
increased documentation of internal control systems, and
often consults with school superintendents and business managers
on how to improve their recordkeeping.
His work for credit unions has involved, among other things,
examining loan files to test, reconcile and clean up their
formats, as well as track complicated wire transfer records.
Mr.
Horvatich’s for-profit experience has included
performing audits for clients whose financial records
were in disarray. He helps organize records into an
understandable, usable system, which plays a role
in companies' prospects for a turnaround.
Mr. Horvatich
received his bachelor of arts degree in accounting
in 1983 from St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. He
currently serves as secretary of the Lions Club of
New Brighton. |
